ZIMBABWE Consolidated Diamond Company has donated 60 refuse bins to Chipinge Town Council as part of a partnership to strengthen waste management in the eastern border town.
The initiative aims to reduce littering and promote responsible waste disposal in the town of about 35,000 people in Manicaland province.
Margaret Muyambo, the council’s environmental health officer, said the local authority approached the miner for support as it pushes to improve cleanliness in the community.
“As Chipinge Town Council, we are on a drive to encourage and maintain a clean and sustainable environment in our community,” Muyambo said.
“We engaged ZCDC for a partnership through donation of refuse bins and we are glad that the company responded positively and gave us 60 public bins, which will help to promote cleanliness and pride in our community.”
Council officials say the bins are being installed across streets in the town to encourage residents to dispose of waste properly.
“We are committed to ensuring that the bins are utilised effectively, contributing to a cleaner and healthier community for all,” Muyambo said.
“Placement of the bins on the streets has begun and we encourage everyone to play a role in keeping Chipinge clean by utilising them.”
ZCDC Public Relations Manager Tsungirirai Dhambuza said the partnership reflects the company’s environmental commitments.
“Caring for the environment is one of ZCDC’s values and we are committed to sustainable environmental stewardship,” Dhambuza said.
“This commitment drives us to continue forging partnerships such as the one we had with Chipinge Town Council.”
Dhambuza said the bins would help improve public health and maintain the town’s appearance.
“The bins are an essential tool for keeping the town healthy, functional and pleasant to live in,” she said.
ZCDC operates diamond mining projects in Chiadzwa and Chimanimani in Manicaland province.
Chipinge lies about 185 km south-east of Mutare near the Mt Selinda border with Mozambique and serves as an agricultural hub with tourist sites such as Chirinda Forest Botanical Reserve.
