- Screening should continue beyond October, company says.
T&A Drilling and Blasting has joined the global breast cancer awareness campaign, urging women and men to go for regular screening so the disease can be detected and treated early.
Gladys Chakanyuka, a member of the company’s safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) team, spoke at the company’s breast cancer awareness campaign and donation in Hatcliff, Harare. She said the company was using its platform to raise awareness during October, which is breast cancer awareness month.
“As T&A, with our motto ‘We Drill, We Blast, We Fight Breast Cancer,’ we are here to raise awareness,” Chakanyuka said.
She said the campaign matters in mining, which has a Women in Mining community, and that it is important for the company to raise awareness for women.
Chakanyuka said breast cancer does not affect only women. “Men can also get breast cancer. So we encourage everyone to go for screening,” she said.
She said regular screening is critical because early detection saves lives. Breast cancer can be treated if it is found early, and it is better to be screened every year, she said.
“Screening is not only in October, but throughout the year you can go and be screened for early detection,” Chakanyuka said.
She said the company’s involvement is meant to show care for the community. “We are here to raise that awareness, to show you that we love you, and you need to take care of yourselves,” she said.
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in Zimbabwe after cervical cancer, according to the National Cancer Plan 2025-2030.
