THE CENTRE for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) has urged China’s ambassador to Zimbabwe to intervene over what it describes as environmentally damaging and potentially unlawful mining activities involving some Chinese-linked mining operations.

In an open letter addressed to Chinese Ambassador Zhou Ding, the advocacy group said it had received complaints from communities across Zimbabwe alleging damage to forests, rivers, ecologically sensitive areas and culturally significant landscapes.

The organisation said concerns had been raised in several parts of the country, including Shurugwi, Mberengwa, Penhalonga, Mutoko, Mazowe, Odzi and the Haroni-Rusitu area.

CNRG said some of the reported impacts involve degradation of environmentally sensitive areas, pollution of water sources, land disturbance and inadequate mine rehabilitation.

“These are not simply mining sites; they are part of Zimbabwe’s environmental heritage and ecological systems,” the organisation said in the letter.

Particular concern was raised over mining activities at Christmas Pass Mountain near Mutare, where CNRG said operations have continued despite opposition from local communities and legal challenges.

The organisation said the site’s proximity to Hillcrest College had raised concerns about erosion, slope instability, water contamination and other environmental and safety risks.

“The potential environmental, health and safety implications for learners, teachers and surrounding communities warrant urgent attention,” CNRG said.

The group also alleged that some operations may not have fully complied with environmental assessment and planning requirements, although it did not provide evidence in the letter and called for further scrutiny by authorities.

CNRG said no investor, regardless of nationality, should be allowed to operate outside Zimbabwe’s environmental, mining and land-use laws.

The organisation urged Chinese companies operating in Zimbabwe to comply with local regulations, conduct environmental assessments, consult affected communities and avoid operations that place sensitive ecosystems or public infrastructure at risk.

It also called on Chinese authorities to encourage responsible investment practices among companies operating in Zimbabwe.

CNRG said stronger environmental stewardship and community engagement would help protect both local communities and the broader Zimbabwe-China relationship.

The organisation warned that unresolved disputes between mining companies and affected communities could increase tensions and expose investors to reputational risks if concerns are not addressed.
