THE THEFT of minerals, fuel, and equipment has become an increasingly pressing issue at mine sites, prompting operators to bolster security around processing plants, storage areas, and transport routes.

Mining companies are now turning to electronic monitoring systems and controlled access technology to safeguard their high-value operations and avoid costly disruptions.

Zimbabwe’s mining sector has seen rapid growth in recent years, especially in gold and lithium, which has increased the need for robust site security and operational oversight.

According to the 2023 Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe annual report, illegal mining, mineral theft, and unauthorised access continue to pose significant challenges across the industry.

As a result, operators are implementing layered security systems that integrate surveillance technology, perimeter fencing, and controlled access to sensitive areas.

The aim is straightforward: to identify risks early and prevent incidents from interrupting production.

Wheels Security Solutions (PVT) Ltd is one of the companies expanding its services to cater to the mining sector’s increasing demand for specialised security systems.

This Zimbabwe-based firm offers electronic monitoring technology, perimeter protection, and tamper-proof security seals for both industrial and commercial operations.

Officials from the company assert that mining operations necessitate a higher level of protection due to the value of the minerals involved and the complexity of large industrial sites.

“Mining facilities operate around the clock and often handle materials worth millions of dollars,” the director of Wheels Security Solutions said.

“A single security breach at a processing plant or storage facility can lead to substantial financial losses and disrupt operations.”

Monitoring high-value areas

Surveillance systems have become a vital component of modern mine security.

Camera networks set up around processing plants, storage yards, and plant entrances enable control rooms to keep an eye on activities in real time.

Security teams can track vehicle movements, monitor production areas, and spot suspicious behaviour before it turns into theft or damage.

“Electronic monitoring gives operators visibility across large sites where physical patrols alone are no longer enough,” the director explained.

“It allows security teams to respond swiftly when something unusual occurs.”

High-value areas like gold rooms, chemical storage units, and equipment depots often need stricter access controls.

Biometric access systems and digital entry points ensure that only authorised personnel can access restricted zones.

This strategy significantly reduces opportunities for internal theft or unauthorised tampering with equipment.

“Access control creates accountability inside the mine,” the director said.

“It ensures that sensitive areas are safeguarded and that every entry is logged.”

Protecting the mine perimeter

While monitoring systems keep an eye on activities inside the mine, perimeter security is there to stop unauthorised access right from the start.

Electric fencing and automated gates play a crucial role in securing the mine’s boundaries and managing the access points used by workers, contractors, and transport vehicles.

Alarm systems that are integrated into the fencing can quickly alert security teams if there’s ever a breach in the perimeter.

Security experts underscore that these early alerts are vital for mines located in remote areas, where a swift response is absolutely essential.

“Perimeter protection forms the first line of defence at any industrial site,” the director said.

“When a fence is breached, operators need to know immediately.”

Tailings storage facilities and fuel depots are also typically safeguarded with surveillance cameras and perimeter fencing.

These locations require constant vigilance due to environmental hazards and the risk of theft or sabotage.

Securing mineral transport

The security challenges don’t just vanish once minerals leave the processing plant.

Ore, equipment, and chemical materials often travel between various locations, which opens up chances for tampering or theft during transit.

To combat this, tamper-proof security seals are commonly employed to safeguard containers, storage units, and transport vehicles that carry these valuable materials.

Wheels Security Solutions offers both metal and plastic security seals that clearly indicate if a container or vehicle has been accessed.

These seals are frequently used on transport trucks, storage tanks, and packaging units that contain minerals or industrial supplies.

“Security seals provide a simple but effective safeguard during transport,” the director said.

“They make it immediately clear if someone has interfered with a container or shipment.”

Mining companies are increasingly adopting such systems to enhance accountability throughout the logistics chain.

These small yet practical tools can greatly diminish the chances of mineral theft.

Security as part of modern mining operations

Zimbabwe’s mining sector continues to be the country’s leading source of export revenue.

In fact, it accounted for over 70% of export earnings in 2023, as reported by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in its Monetary Policy Statement for 2024.

With production on the rise, companies are increasingly investing in technology that safeguards both their physical infrastructure and production processes.

Security systems are now a standard component of modern mine design.

“Security technology is now integrated into daily mining operations in the same way as safety systems,” said the director of Wheels Security Solutions.

“It helps create a controlled environment where workers, equipment, and materials are protected.”

Wheels Security Solutions is broadening its focus on mining operations, responding to the growing demand for specialised industrial security systems.

“Our aim is to provide practical solutions that assist mines in safeguarding their personnel, equipment, and production,” the director explained.

“We want to support an industry that is vital to the country’s economy.”
