THE ZIMBABWE National Institute of Rock Engineering is calling for technical papers for its 2026 Annual General Meeting and Symposium, which will focus on technology and fall-of-ground management.
The symposium will be held on Oct. 23 at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge under the theme, “Leveraging Technology for Next Generation Fall of Ground Management,” ZINIRE said.
Abstracts must be submitted by Sept. 30, according to the institute.
The event comes as ground collapses remain a major safety concern in Zimbabwe’s mining sector. Artisanal and small-scale mining recorded 64 fatalities in the first quarter of 2026, with ground collapses accounting for 54%, Mines Minister Polite Kambamura said.
Kambamura said the government was introducing digital inspection systems, drone surveillance and geotechnical monitoring to help detect and prevent ground-related risks.
ZINIRE’s focus on technology follows its 2025 symposium, where industry professionals discussed rock support, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The event will be attended by professionals involved in rock engineering and ground control, including rock engineers, mine managers, geologists, mining engineers and safety practitioners.
ZINIRE held its 2025 symposium in Victoria Falls under the theme “Managing Fall of Ground into the Future.”
