  • AMSZ will hold its 41st annual conference in Masvingo on Aug. 27-28.
  • Mine surveyors are taking on wider roles in mineral accountability, production verification and mining regulation.
  • The conference will focus on spatial data, cadastre modernisation and strategic partnerships.

THE ASSOCIATION of Mine Surveyors of Zimbabwe will hold its 41st Annual General Meeting and Conference in Masvingo next week, as the profession takes on a wider role in how Zimbabwe manages its mineral resources.

The two-day event will be held on Aug. 27-28 at the Great Zimbabwe Hotel under the theme, “From Survey to Service and Strategic Partnerships for National Mining Growth.”

AMSZ says changes in mining policy and investor requirements are placing greater importance on reliable spatial data.

The association says mine surveyors are no longer limited to measuring and mapping mine workings. Their work increasingly covers spatial data, production verification, mineral accountability, regulatory compliance, environmental monitoring and planning.

AMSZ President Stewart Gumbi said the profession had moved into a more strategic position over the past two years.

“Together, we have repositioned the mine surveyor from a downstream technician into a strategic leader … a custodian of spatial data, an independent production auditor, and an indispensable partner in national mineral accountability,” Gumbi said.

The shift comes as Zimbabwe moves to modernise the way mining rights and mineral information are managed.

The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development says its computerised mining cadastre system is being developed to improve the administration of mining rights, including the registration and management of mining claims and leases.

The government has also identified the cadastre system as part of its 2026-28 mining strategy, alongside mineral exploration, beneficiation and stronger environmental compliance.

The electronic cadastre is expected to make greater use of survey-grade geographic data, making the accuracy of mine surveying increasingly important to the sector.

AMSZ said its conference will address issues including cadastre modernisation, mineral accountability, beneficiation, small-scale mining regularisation and disaster risk management.

The association has urged members, employers and industry partners to attend, saying the meeting will help shape the profession’s next phase.

“Every delegate and every voice matters. The decisions made at this gathering will shape the Association, the profession and the role of mine surveyors in Zimbabwe’s evolving mining landscape,” AMSZ said.
