VIVO Energy has kicked off its annual safety campaign across 28 African markets, with a strong focus on emergency preparedness and response in its operations.
The company, known for distributing Shell and Engen-branded fuels and lubricants, said that this initiative is part of its Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality (HSSEQ) framework.
This year’s theme, “Prepare to Respond,” is all about boosting emergency readiness among employees, contractors, and business partners.
Grant Bairstow, Vivo Energy’s Vice President for HSSEQ and AMTA, highlighted that the campaign is a key part of the company’s safety culture.
“At Vivo Energy, we share the belief that every incident is preventable, and we are committed to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and safety vigilance,” Bairstow said.
He explained that the programme includes Safety Day events, crisis simulations, expert-led sessions, and a central emergency exercise aimed at testing response systems.
“The safety of our people, our partners, and the communities where we operate is our utmost priority,” he added.
The campaign is directed at staff, contractors, and retail partners working at service stations, fuel depots, and supply infrastructure across the continent.
Vivo Energy confirmed that activities will be held in all 28 markets where it operates, although specific dates or locations for the central emergency exercise were not disclosed.
Bairstow said that employees will receive training on clear reporting lines, evacuation procedures, and lifesaving techniques when necessary.
“This year, we especially want to practise good safety habits and ensure that we all know what to do, who to reach out to, and what lifesaving techniques to apply in case of an emergency,” he said.
The energy sector is under increased scrutiny regarding operational safety, particularly in areas like fuel storage, transport, and retail distribution.
Companies that operate fuel depots and forecourts usually carry out regular emergency drills to minimise risks related to fire, spills, and other incidents.
Vivo Energy hasn’t shared specific numbers to measure how effective the campaign has been, but they did mention that it aligns with their “Goal Zero” target, which focuses on preventing harm to both people and the environment.
The company also stated that they plan to keep engaging with employees and partners even after the campaign wraps up, aiming to enhance safety performance in the long run.
