In this interview, Chigwada discusses her journey, the future of engineering and why women must be central to building secure, intelligent systems.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1341\">\u201cEngineering today is no longer just about components. Who is Engineer Charity Chenai Chigwada?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1587\" data-end=\"1843\"><strong data-start=\"1587\" data-end=\"1593\">A:<\/strong> I\u2019m a principal engineer and digital transformation leader working across telecommunications, cybersecurity, robotics and business innovation. I\u2019m licensed by the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe and a member of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"2018\">I currently lead digital services and delivery at TelOne and mentor young engineers, especially women, to drive future-ready infrastructure for Zimbabwe\u2019s industrial growth.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2025\" data-end=\"2073\"><strong data-start=\"2029\" data-end=\"2071\">Q: What first drew you to engineering?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2167\"><strong data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2080\">A:<\/strong> Curiosity. As a child, I took apart radios and toy cars to understand how they worked.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2169\" data-end=\"2372\">That curiosity matured during my undergraduate studies in electronic engineering, where I saw how engineering solves real-world problems. For me, it\u2019s about building solutions that create lasting impact.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2169\" data-end=\"2372\">\u201cFor me, engineering is about building solutions that create lasting impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2536\"><strong data-start=\"2491\" data-end=\"2534\">Q: What is your area of specialisation?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2537\" data-end=\"2635\"><strong data-start=\"2537\" data-end=\"2543\">A:<\/strong> I work at the intersection of telecommunications, digital infrastructure and cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2637\" data-end=\"2761\">My focus is on building secure, high-availability connectivity systems for sectors such as mining, smart cities and fintech.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2768\" data-end=\"2836\"><strong data-start=\"2772\" data-end=\"2834\">Q: What does an electronic engineer do in practical terms?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2837\" data-end=\"2984\"><strong data-start=\"2837\" data-end=\"2843\">A:<\/strong> We design and optimise the systems that power the digital world, these include circuits, embedded devices and platforms that connect hardware and software.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2986\" data-end=\"3071\">It\u2019s no longer just about parts. It\u2019s about integrated systems that drive innovation.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3078\" data-end=\"3146\"><strong data-start=\"3082\" data-end=\"3144\">Q: What are the core principles of electronic engineering?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3147\" data-end=\"3268\"><strong data-start=\"3147\" data-end=\"3153\">A:<\/strong> Signal integrity, power management, reliable circuit design, system integration and electromagnetic compatibility.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3270\" data-end=\"3401\">These fundamentals apply whether you\u2019re designing drilling sensors for mining or millimetre-wave networks for smart infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3650\" data-end=\"3705\"><strong data-start=\"3654\" data-end=\"3703\">Q: What does a typical day look like for you?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3706\" data-end=\"3769\"><strong data-start=\"3706\" data-end=\"3712\">A:<\/strong> My role blends technical depth with business innovation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3771\" data-end=\"3996\">I begin with product security reviews, embedding cybersecurity into platforms like Smart Parking or InsureMe. I also train developers, conduct threat modelling and research future technologies such as post-quantum encryption.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3771\" data-end=\"3996\">\u201cBalancing innovation and security is the hardest part, but turning security into a value enabler is the most rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"4156\" data-end=\"4232\"><strong data-start=\"4160\" data-end=\"4230\">Q: What qualifications and experience are essential for your role?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4233\" data-end=\"4351\"><strong data-start=\"4233\" data-end=\"4239\">A:<\/strong> A strong foundation in electronic engineering, a master\u2019s degree in cybersecurity and continuous certification.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4353\" data-end=\"4463\">But real impact comes from combining technical depth with business awareness and product lifecycle experience.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4470\" data-end=\"4544\"><strong data-start=\"4474\" data-end=\"4542\">Q: What skills should young cybersecurity professionals develop?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4545\" data-end=\"4615\"><strong data-start=\"4545\" data-end=\"4551\">A:<\/strong> Threat modelling, full-stack security knowledge and automation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4617\" data-end=\"4730\">Equally important is the ability to translate technical risk into business language. Communication skills matter.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4968\" data-end=\"5037\"><strong data-start=\"4972\" data-end=\"5035\">Q: How do you see the cybersecurity threat landscape today?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5038\" data-end=\"5063\"><strong data-start=\"5038\" data-end=\"5044\">A:<\/strong> It\u2019s accelerating.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5065\" data-end=\"5329\">Operational technology, especially in mining, is increasingly exposed. Generative AI is being weaponised for phishing, and software supply chains are a major risk. At the same time, this is driving innovation in zero-trust frameworks and quantum-safe cryptography.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5336\" data-end=\"5396\"><strong data-start=\"5340\" data-end=\"5394\">Q: How does electronic engineering support mining?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5397\" data-end=\"5422\"><strong data-start=\"5397\" data-end=\"5403\">A:<\/strong> It\u2019s foundational.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5424\" data-end=\"5577\">From vibration sensors on haul trucks to ruggedised 5G networks underground, electronic engineering connects physical operations to digital intelligence.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"5424\" data-end=\"5577\">\u201cIn mining, electronic engineering bridges the physical world and digital intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"5703\" data-end=\"5759\"><strong data-start=\"5707\" data-end=\"5757\">Q: Why does engineering remain male-dominated?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5760\" data-end=\"5873\"><strong data-start=\"5760\" data-end=\"5766\">A:<\/strong> Early stereotypes discourage girls from STEM. Visibility is also a challenge; young women need role models.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5875\" data-end=\"6027\">Workplace culture and infrastructure are often not gender-inclusive, but initiatives like Girls in ICT and ZIE mentorship programmes are driving change.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6034\" data-end=\"6084\"><strong data-start=\"6038\" data-end=\"6082\">Q: What helped you move into leadership?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6085\" data-end=\"6141\"><strong data-start=\"6085\" data-end=\"6091\">A:<\/strong> Technical depth, business fluency and mentorship.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6143\" data-end=\"6251\">I actively sought sponsors who challenged me, and now I do the same for younger engineers, especially women.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6258\" data-end=\"6331\"><strong data-start=\"6262\" data-end=\"6329\">Q: What advice would you give young women pursuing engineering?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6332\" data-end=\"6388\"><strong data-start=\"6332\" data-end=\"6338\">A:<\/strong> Own your expertise. Seek mentors.
