The move gives Washington a 20 percent stake in Syrah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investment will help secure supply chains for electric vehicles and renewable energy,\u201d DFC said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Syrah Resources confirmed the deal, noting Balama\u2019s importance as one of the largest natural graphite deposits in the world. \u201cThis partnership strengthens our balance sheet and supports expansion at our Vidalia plant in Louisiana,\u201d Syrah chief executive Shaun Verner said.<\/p>\n<p>Graphite is a key material in lithium\u2011ion batteries used in cars, energy storage and electronics. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/02\/14\/us-allies-advance-battery-metals-deals-to-counter-china\/\">China currently dominates<\/a> global graphite supply, controlling more than 80% of processing. The U.S. stake in Balama is seen as a step to reduce reliance on Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>The investment comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/03\/29\/manono-lithium-project-drc\/\">demand for battery minerals<\/a> accelerates under the Inflation Reduction Act, which offers incentives for domestic EV production and clean energy projects. U.S. officials have warned that dependence on Chinese supply chains poses strategic risks, especially after Beijing imposed export controls on graphite in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Mozambique\u2019s government welcomed the investment. \u201cThis shows confidence in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2025\/12\/29\/mukamura-charts-a-path-for-women-engineers-in-zims-mining-sector\/\">mining sector<\/a> and will bring jobs and infrastructure to Cabo Delgado,\u201d said Mineral Resources Minister Carlos Zacarias.<\/p>\n<p>Cabo Delgado has faced insurgent violence in recent years, raising security concerns. Syrah said it continues to work with authorities to safeguard operations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/03\/12\/boss-lee-kadoma-community-work\/\">Local community<\/a> leaders expressed cautious optimism. \u201cWe hope this investment will benefit our people through jobs and development,\u201d said Jo\u00e3o Matola, a resident near Balama.<\/p>\n<p>The deal also highlights growing competition between the U.S. and China in Africa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/03\/02\/women-in-mining-awards-harare-2026\/\">mining sector<\/a>. Beijing has long financed projects and secured supply agreements across the continent. Washington\u2019s move into Balama shows a willingness to compete directly.<\/p>\n<p>Syrah\u2019s Vidalia plant in Louisiana will process Balama graphite into anode material for U.S. automakers. \u201cLinking African raw materials to American manufacturing is critical for EV adoption,\u201d Verner said.<\/p>\n<p>Market volatility remains a challenge. Graphite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/03\/29\/sa-drc-critical-metals\/\">prices fluctuate with demand for electric vehicles and global supply<\/a> dynamics. But U.S. officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/03\/16\/lusiyano-mining-strategy-zimbabwe\/\">say strategic needs outweigh short\u2011term risks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental groups have raised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/02\/10\/zimbabwe-lithium-mine-water-concerns-prompt-regulator-review\/\">concerns about mining<\/a> impacts.
