{"id":1877,"date":"2026-03-29T11:38:44","date_gmt":"2026-03-29T11:38:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/?p=1877"},"modified":"2026-03-29T16:26:05","modified_gmt":"2026-03-29T16:26:05","slug":"workplace-safety-law-zimbabwe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/03\/29\/workplace-safety-law-zimbabwe\/","title":{"rendered":"Workplace deaths hit four\u2011year high, new safety law planned"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-summary\" style=\"background: #F9F9F9; border-left: 4px solid #1e6bb8; padding: 16px 20px; margin-bottom: 24px; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6; color: #212223;\">\n<ul style=\"margin: 0; padding-left: 20px;\">\n<li>Zimbabwe recorded 78 workplace deaths in 2025, the highest in four years.<\/li>\n<li>Minister Edgar Moyo said a new safety law will target mining and other high\u2011risk industries.<\/li>\n<li>The Vision Zero campaign calls for zero accidents, injuries, diseases, and deaths at work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>WORKPLACE deaths in Zimbabwe reached their highest level in four years, with 78 fatalities reported in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Edgar Moyo said mining and other high\u2011risk industries would be covered by a new safety law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2022, a total of 4,912 disabling injuries were recorded, accompanied by 70 fatalities,\u201d Moyo told delegates at the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) Engineers\u2019 Workshop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2023, we observed some improvement with 4,334 injuries and 60 fatalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said progress was not sustained. \u201cIn 2024, 4,242 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2025\/12\/28\/zimplats-records-zero-lost-time-injuries-in-third-quarter\/\">injuries were recorded<\/a>, but tragically, 70 lives were lost. Most concerning in 2025, 4,414 injuries were reported, with 78 fatalities, the highest loss of life in this period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moyo stressed the value of human life. \u201cLife is sacrosanct and God\u2011given. No worker deserves to be incapacitated or die because of work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/03\/02\/actionaid-zimbabwe-inclusive-mining-governance\/\">government would push<\/a> for a new occupational safety and health law to reduce workplace tragedies. \u201cGovernment will do everything possible to address this needless loss of lives at work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2025\/12\/29\/mukamura-charts-a-path-for-women-engineers-in-zims-mining-sector\/\">Mining remains among the most dangerous sectors<\/a>. The Vision Zero campaign, which calls for zero accidents, injuries, diseases, and deaths, is being promoted to improve safety standards.<\/p>\n<p>Moyo urged employers to act. \u201cEvery employer should be educated that the greatest asset to any company is the employee,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that technology and collaboration should be used to improve safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s commit ourselves to inculcate a culture of safety and health in the workplace, ensuring that we leverage our technology to create a highly safe and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimining.co.zw\/index.php\/2026\/03\/01\/gold-reserves-boost-zig-backing\/\">productive<\/a> workplace in Zimbabwe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zimbabwe recorded 78 workplace deaths in 2025, the highest in four years.
