  • Minex to launch “The Great Dyke: Beyond The Rock” in Kwekwe on November 5.
  • Book was compiled by Minex chairman Munyaradzi Hwengwere.
  • It covers the Dyke’s economy, people and environment, organisers say.
  • Pre-orders are open at $20 ahead of the launch.

MINEX will launch a book on the Great Dyke, the 550 km geological formation that hosts Zimbabwe’s platinum and chrome deposits, in Kwekwe on November 5.

The book, “The Great Dyke: Beyond The Rock”, was compiled by Minex chairman Munyaradzi Hwengwere, who also champions the Buy Zimbabwe campaign.

Minex is organising the launch with the Gifted Children Foundation at King Solomon Hotel, during the Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke cycling event. The theme is “Connecting Miners and Stakeholders”.

Hwengwere said the book looks beyond extraction to the Dyke’s economic significance, its people and its environment. It aims to tell “a more complete story” of the formation, he said.

According to its synopsis, the book covers the human, economic and historical story of the feature that cuts across the centre of Zimbabwe, including communities, livelihoods and opportunities linked to it.

Organisers expect miners, investors, policymakers and other stakeholders from across the mining value chain to attend. They have opened pre-orders at $20 under a limited offer ahead of the launch.

The Great Dyke is Zimbabwe’s most important geological feature. Zimbabwe holds the second-largest known platinum group metals reserves in the world, Deputy Minister of Mines Caleb Makwiranzou told investors in Perth in September.

The Dyke is drawing fresh investment. Tharisa signed a 25-year special mining lease in August for its Karo platinum project, with a first-phase investment of about $545 million. Zimplats, which operates on the Dyke, said this week that retiring chief executive Alexander Mhembere led a $1.8 billion investment programme that included an upgraded smelter.

The Tour de Great Dyke was launched in 2016 to promote miner wellness, care for the environment and awareness of investment opportunities along the Dyke. The route passes through towns including Chegutu, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Gweru and Shurugwi.
